(11-10-21) Thursday Monroeville will play St. Henry in a D IV State Volleyball Semifinal match. The Eagles beat Wellsville in the Regional Final 23-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-18.

Monroeville played with heavy hearts this season as defensive specialist Delaney Giles (Sr) died on Sept. 10 due to her injuries from a car accident in July. Giles was on the roster on Saturday for the Eagles and listed as #8 for the regional final match.

Just after Delaney’s tragic death and the 1st match after her death…Monroeville volleyball coach Kendra Snook told the Sandusky Register Star:

“Delaney was always laughing and always playing around. She worked hard and that is what these kids continue to do. Volleyball does not solve anything, but it helps relieve a little bit of that pain that all of us are feeling. It is a tough thing for this team and a tough thing for this community, her family — and all of the surrounding communities, too.”

Delaney Marie Giles Obituary

We are saddened to share the passing of Delaney Giles. Delaney was a member of the 2021-2022 senior class at Monroeville High School. Her final weekend was spent celebrating as the 2021 Homecoming Queen with her friends and family.

Ever the social butterfly, Delaney loved all aspects of her school community. She enjoyed people and laughter, helping friends, and celebrating life. While it might cost you a trip to Dunkin for a lavender latte, Delaney would always rush to support friends and family in a time of need.

In school, Delaney excelled academically and as a member of the volleyball, basketball, and track and field teams for Monroeville. She was a proud member of the Teen Leadership team, 4H, FFA, and numerous AAU teams.

True to her helping spirit Delaney continues to support others with her desire to donate life as an organ donor.

Delaney is survived by her parents, Jerry and Kristin Giles; her paternal grandparents, John and Connie Giles; her maternal grandmother, Renee Woodworth; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 23, 2021, at the Huron County Fairgrounds Expo Building, 940 Fair Rd., Norwalk from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m., where a funeral service will be held the following day, Friday, September 24, 2021 beginning at 11 a.m. with burial to follow in North Fairfield Cemetery.  A separate celebration of Delaney’s life is being planned for a later date to be held in the Monroeville Athletic Complex (MAC).  Memorial contributions if desired may be directed to the Monroeville Athletic Boosters “Track Project”, 101 West St., Monroeville, OH 44847 or through Croghan Bank and asking about the “Monroeville Athletic Boosters Track Project”.  Online condolences to the family may be expressed by visiting www.walkereastmanheydingerfh.com

Division IV State Final FOUR Schedule

  • No. 14 Monroeville (24-4) vs. No. 5 St. Henry (21-6), Thurs., 4 p.m.
  • No. 7 South Webster (25-1) vs. No. 2 New Knoxville (25-2), Thurs., 6 p.m.
  • Division IV State Championship: Sat., Nov. 13 at 1 p.m.

In the 2nd game of D IV Final Four..grief and tragedy is facing New Knoxville.

New Knoxville went thru a very emotional time last week in the lost of their coach’s husband in a tragic automobile crash last Monday.

The Rangers fought the sorrow they faced by knocking off Leipsic (25-19, 25-11, 25-12) in the Regional semifinal match and coming back from a first set loss to beat defending D IV state champion Tiffin Calvert (26-28, 25-23, 25-23, 25-22) in the Regional Final.

Both Monroeville and New Knoxville have shown strength in this time of grief and tragedy, should either win the championship it will help with some of the personal losses. What was suppose to be a lifetime experience in athletics, has turned into important life-lessons learned…something both teams will always remember.
