(2-26-25) Over the years Dayton Dunbar has been on the OHSAA ‘hot seat’ for numerous violations.

This week Dunbar found out again that they had an ineligible player participate in a boys basketball tournament win.

In Friday’s D IV boys basketball OHSAA tournament game on Friday Dunbar beat Eaton 68-43. However, A DECA (charter school) student, who had been expelled, had played for 22 seconds. He was never enrolled at Dunbar. The Wolverines win was turned into a 2-0 forfeit win for Eaton.

Dave Taylor, the chief executive officer and superintendent at DECA informed Dayton Public superintendent David Lawrence that DECA didn’t contact DPS about the expulsion due to an administrator being out on leave.

Dayton Public Schools board of education voted last night unanimously to temporarily ban non-Dayton Public School students from playing in the districts’ sports leagues during a special board meeting.

Eaton, who was given the forfeit win, re-enters the tournament and will play Northridge tonight.

No comment from the OHSAA on the situation.
