The incident took place with 6 minutes and 39 seconds left in the second quarter. The referee, who has not been publicly identified, received immediate aid from athletic trainers and emergency service workers, including the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) on the court.
Monrovia athletic director Jon Regashus told the Indy Star –
“He was on the baseline. There was an offensive rebound and he stepped back into position and lost his legs (balance). I’m not a medical expert but it appeared to be a cardiac arrest. It was awful. Just tragic. You feel for everybody who was involved in the game, from the players to the cheerleaders and everyone here … it’s just heartbreaking.”
