(6-10-17) – Twice in Celina High School boys basketball history the Bulldogs have won the AP Season ending poll. The first time was in 1972 when Celina won the AAA Poll finishing the the regular season at 18-0. The 72 team lost in the state semi-finals to Cleveland East Tech.
In 1999 Celina won the D I AP Poll, the award was handed out before the final regular season games were played, at that time Celina was 19-0 and they had just recently knocked off Toledo Central Catholic 63-62 who had been the #1 team. As luck would have it in the final regular season game the Bulldogs would lose to Delphos St. Johns 50-46 and end the season at 19-1. But they were the 1999 D1 AP Poll Champions.
The Bulldogs picked up the 1999 WBL title going 9-0, it was their first league championship since 1994.
Celina would move on to tournament play, after getting a first-round bye they would win the Sectional Final beating Bowling Green 59-40. In the District semifinal game, the Bulldogs beat #4 State ranked Lima Senior 72-63 in a front of a packed house at Liberty Benton.
Next up for the Bulldogs, in the District Final, would be a rematch with Toledo Central Catholic. In another close game the Bulldogs this time would drop a heart-breaker to TCC 64-61. In the two games between them, a total of four points separated the winner from the loser. With the loss the Bulldogs ended the year at 21-2.
The ’99 Bulldogs were a veteran team featuring 10 seniors on the roster for Coaches Mike Kanney and Joe Niekamp.
The talented group was led by Kyle Dingledine who was a third team D I All State pick and a first team All WBL player. Curt Grimes joined Dingledine on the All WBL first team and was on the All-State Honorable Mention list. AJ Shellabarger was an All WBL special mention selection and Eric Beckstedt was named Honorable Mention.
