(8-15-19) Long-time St. Marys Roughrider football fans will remember Joe Hurlburt, who provided color commentary on WMER, now WKKI from from 1992 to 2004. Hurlburt will be back in the broadcast booth when he becomes the play-by-play man for Rider Nation Station.

Hurlburt was a color commentator on radio with ‘Big’ Ralph Guarnieri on WMER, now WKKI for over 25 years, Guarnieri passed away in 2005.

He told the Evening Leader

“It’s been almost 15 years since I have done this, but I have done a lot of games in the past,. And most of my time has been color commentating and statistics, but I have done some play-by-play in both football and basketball and I helped Doug (Spencer) out when he did MTV through the high school.

When you sit besides somebody for so long — and I think we [he and Guarnieri] did a couple thousand games together, and maybe even more — so with some of that style has rubbed off and I will probably give some kind of Ralph flare to it. But I couldn’t ask for a better mentor than Ralph. He was good.”

It is not Hurlburt’s first go-around on TV, he also was a part of Limaland Spreedway broadcasts on WTLW-TV back in 2001-2002.

Rider Nation Station will broadcast four of the five home games this season — with the first game being Sept. 20 in the home opener against Van Wert. The home game on Oct. 18th against Bath will not be aired.

Rider Nation Station You Tube page will provide live audio, the games will be only available to watch after the game is completed. The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) does not allow any high school  sports event to be video broadcast live. Delayed video will also be aired on  TSC’s (Telephone Service Company) cable channels after the game.
