(10-22-17) – Could Celina be celebrating a football playoff berth next week?
The Bulldogs will need at least a win over Shawnee (4-5), one of the Indians’ losses this season was to St. Marys (9-15-17) 35-34 in OT.
Celina will also be rooting for St. Marys (that doesn’t happen very often) on Friday night when they play Wapakoneta. The Roughriders, who claimed the WBL title last Friday against Defiance 50-0, would like to see a 10-0 for the regular season with a win against the Redskins.
The Bulldogs will also be keeping an eye on Dayton Dunbar, who will be playing Thurgood Marshall who is 6-3 on the season and on a 6-game winning streak. Last year Dunbar caused havoc off-the-field during the playoffs. The Wolverines forfeited their last two games of the year due to ineligible players, plus down the road they attempted to lose their last game of the year to get a better seeding for the playoffs (ask Piqua, it also knocked them out because of the incident).
Looking back the last second game-winning field goal by Elida could be the difference maker looking back on the season.
Joe Eitel’s web site, that covers all 8 divisions of the computer rankings, has already posted the rankings and updates thru week 9 games, as Joe states they are all ‘unofficial’. But this time of year this site is one of the most popular for Ohio HS football fans.
The site brings in the ‘unknown‘ factor of what the total computer points will be for a team that wins out in four different categories.
- Win Out – Maximum Average
- Win Out – Minimum Average
- Lose Out – Maximum Average
- Lose Out – Minimum Average
Celina will need to beat Shawnee, at least one of these three teams, Dunbar, Wapakoneta and Elida need to lose.
Plus, the Bulldogs need to keep an eye on New Richmond, Piqua and Wilmington scores, all three with wins could move up into the Top 8 and also push Celina out of the playoffs.
What the experts say
In region 12, Celina does have a possible chance of making it with a win and a loss by Wapak and/or Dunbar, however they will still need to watch the scoreboard on Friday night as there are also a few other teams which could potentially pass them from behind and claim the spot if it opens up. Specifically New Richmond, Piqua, Wilmington and McNicholas all have big games which could vault them into contention should they win.
Celina probably finishes 9th. Needs one upset in their favor. Maybe Hamilton Badin over McNicholas, O-G over Elida or Thurgood Marshall over Dunbar.
For St. Henry and Ft. Recovery the playoffs start on Friday night as they end the regular season playing each other. Using Eitel’s averages from above, the Indians must beat St. Henry to have a chance to qualify. St. Henry, if they lose, will have to keep an eye on two other schools, Dayton Christian and Mechanicsburg
What the experts say
Fort Recovery vs St. Henry is essentially a play-in game. Barring an unlikely string of upsets elsewhere, the winning team should be a lock and will probably finish either 7 or 8, and the losing team will almost certainly be out.
Winner in, loser all but certainly out.
