(1-22-21) Thanks to the pandemic, that has lasted for almost a year, the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) continues to face issues that have never happened before in the past.

From the latest OHSAA Board of Directors Update from January

BASKETBALL: The regional and state tournament sites are all to be determined. It is not yet known which of the previously announced sites will permit events to be held at their venue, or which will allow spectators. The OHSAA intends to use neutral sites for the regional tournaments

With the start of the tournament in just a few weeks it will be a scramble to find suitable locations.

  • Sectional Tournaments – shall be scheduled between Feb. 15 and Feb. 27, 2021
  • District Tournaments – shall be scheduled between March 1 and March 6, 2021
  • Regional Tournaments – shall be March 8 – 1 3, 2021
  • State Tournament – shall be March 18, 19 and 20, 2021

One location for all of the State Tournaments may be a real problem due to the Governor’s current enforcement of rules and the curfew to be extended. The OHSAA already had to adapt this season when at the very last minute the state football championships had to be moved and relocated…it worked too. That was unpredictable…to have that happen again would be tough to fill.

Easiest solution…four divisions, four separate sites. Unless something changes very quickly seating won’t be an issue. Central location that might be an issue in the state, may be hard to find that many available sites who want to take on that task

The good news..the OHSAA will find the solution and the tournament will happen. Over the past school year they have made the adjustments to make all of the other events work in 2020-21.
