(1-1-25) According to a T’X’itter posting from Martin RPI…MaxPreps basketball point system has a new way of assigning a division when playing an out-of-state (OOS) opponent has changed–

Instead of doing it the correct way, where you assign each out of state opponent to their proper division based on their enrollment, OHSAA/MaxPreps provided the coaches association with 3 options this off-season:

1) every OOS opponent will be treated like a D1/D2 school

2) every OOS opponent will be treated like a D3/D4/D5 school

3) every OOS opponent will be treated like a D6/D7 school

53% voted for option 2, so OHSAA made it official back in October that each OOS opponent is treated as a D4 school.

The MaxPreps system is used to seed teams in Districts for the the state basketball tournaments. Last year was the first year, after a Martin RPI plan had been used the year before.

The question is why? Why were three options even needed and why was the change incorporated as late as October before the start of the season. The new option did not give schools the opportunity to figure out what would be best for their teams.

The OHSAA made the change from Martin RPI to MaxPreps without giving schools the opportunity to vote on it for approval…just as they did for adding three new divisions in basketball.

The OHSAA has not posted anything on the web site about the change.
